Course Description: With an atoms first approach, students receive a thorough introduction to the study of matter and changes in matter. Experiments are integrated with the topics to give the student hands-on experience to conceptualize the concepts. The math work involved is also applied in the experiments to provide quantitative understanding and reasoning. All the experiments in the curriculum are completed with additional activities, labs, demos, and worksheets to facilitate a greater depth of understanding. Topics include the atomic and molecular structure, molecular geometry, polyatomic ions, basic types of chemical reactions, acid-base chemistry, redox reactions, gas laws, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, and more. All lab equipment, materials, and experiment sheets for this course are included in the monthly tuition. Additional online study/help sessions are available as needed.
Textbook: Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 3rd edition, 2nd printing or later printing.
