Week 1
Welcome to Calculus! My name is Mr. Motter, and I will be teaching this math course at CATN this year. I am looking forward to the coming academic year, and working with you to enhance your math skills.
A few items:
1. Course Syllabus: I am attaching this year’s syllabus, as well as test-taking guidelines. The syllabus provides general information concerning the course that you will find helpful, including the assigned textbook. The textbook we will be using is called Saxon Calculus, Second Edition. Its ISBN Numbers are 978-1-56577-146-8 and 1-56577-146-X. Please purchase both the textbook and the solutions manual for this textbook.
2. Testing Policy: Exams in this course will be completed outside of class. We will have an exam approximately every two weeks. I will be using the same testing policy that has been in place for the CATN science courses over the past several years.
3. Homework: Homework assignments will be provided via email. The timely and accurate completion of assigned homework is critical to success in this course. The assigned text is divided into 148 lessons, and the class will be reviewing 4 to 5 lessons every week. Homework questions will be assigned for every section. Assigned questions will include a subset of the questions at the end of each lesson. Students should review the assigned lessons and complete the homework before coming to class. During the class, assigned lessons will be reviewed and homework questions will be discussed. The homework set will be turned in at the beginning of the following week to permit time for corrections as needed. Approximately 40-50 homework questions will be assigned each week. Students are strongly encouraged to do some homework each day to facilitate learning over a period of days. “Cramming” assignments until the day prior to class is highly discouraged.
4. Homework Assignment due September 10th: The following problems should be completed prior to our first session on September 10th:
Lesson 1: (beginning page 5) 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 17, 20, 24.
Lesson 2: (beginning page 12) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 17, 18.
Lesson 3: (beginning page 15) 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17.
Lesson 4: (beginning page 20) 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 16, 23, 24.

1. Due on September 17: Turn in assigned problem homework set from week 1 (Lessons 1-4) for grade at beginning of class. Please make sure to show your work for all problems completed.

Note: As we discussed, the Saxon Calculus textbook and Solutions Manual remain on backorder. I spoke with the distributor earlier today, and have been informed that shipments may begin later this week. We will all stay tuned to see how soon the materials are shipped. In the interim, I am attaching PDF copies of lessons 5 through 8, as well as copies of the Solutions Manual so that our progress through the material is not impeded.
